The prevailing attitude that "men will be  men" is why 1 in 5 women will be raped in their lifetime.

Donald Trump and his supporters would like you to believe that "men will be men" and "locker room talk" as they call it is harmless but here’s why it’s not.  1 in 5 women will be raped in their lifetime. 1 in 5, that means 1 girl in every 2 average american households will be raped. 1 in 5 means 5 girls in an average 4th grade class in California will be raped. This kind of loose talk of assaulting women should be horrifying to any thinking person. It should be abhorrent to any feeling person. This kind of talk should make any woman’s stomach turn and any man cringe. Yet there are people who defend this disgusting behavior saying, "this was a private conversation" and "The comment was lewd, sure, but I've said worse." You have? What's wrong with you? This is exactly the kind of misogynistic and violent speech that propagates the acceptance of violence against women that pervades our culture. When Brock Turner was sentenced to a paltry 6 months in county jail for 3 counts of sexually assaulting an unconscious woman the judge stated as part of his reasoning that a prison sentence would have "severe impact" and "adverse colateral consequences" Really? Severe impact? So waking up to discover that you have been penetrated by a foreign object behind a dumpster will just have a moderate impact? The mandatory minimum sentence for possessing ANY amount of marijuana is one year. One year.  One year for having a joint. One year for taking a bong load at a party. Yet Brock Turner gets 6 months for raping an unconscious woman for 20 minutes.
What is wrong with this picture? When subjects like these arise at parties and dinners I notice the men bristle and squirm in their chairs. I notice that people start to look around as if anyone who gets upset by this appalling state of affairs must hate men. Personally I feel quite the contrary. I expect more from men. I expect they will be just as outraged as I am when they hear this kind of degrading talk about women in the "locker room",  or in any room. I believe that Judges will condemn men who violently force themselves on unconscious women to the maximum punishment the law will allow. Yet again and again I am proved wrong. If men who hold the highest positions of authority so easily denigrate and undercut the severity of sex crimes against women then how can we expect our citizens to walk a higher moral ground? Shouldn’t our leaders be leaders? Talk about trickling down. If the man who hopes to be president of this country thinks it is funny to talk about being able to "Grab them by the pussy. You can do anything." because "when you're a star they let you do it. You can do anything." than we shouldn’t be surprised when young boys rape unconscious girls behind a dumpster.  It falls to all of us, men and women to reject this acceptance of violence against women. Until we do we can expect that approximately 4 women in this class have been or will be raped in their lifetime.

  1. Hi Gioia!
Thank you for bringing up such a current and important topic! I couldn't agree more with you! We have to stop the normalization of "locker room talk", and realize that it strongly affect the way we view women in our society. In his apology, Trump argued there's a "big difference" between words and actions. Well, in my opinion this is complete BS. Words and actions are deeply connected. I saw a tweet after the second debate that said: "Dismissing Trump's behavior as locker room talk is why we have young men like Brock Turner". I loved that you brought that up, and I think we are moving down a dangerous path.
The statistics that you bring up is devastating to me. It's time to wake up, starting by teaching our children how we talk about and view women. I also loved how Michelle Obama talked about how the locker room talk isn’t just harmful to women — it insults men too.

  2. It is shocking to me that Trump is still in the race, especially after such horrible comments he made about women have come to be known, and so many women have come forward saying he has acted inappropriately with them. I think it is embarrassing and a shame for our country that he still is in the race, and that he denies doing anything to women. In the last debate he claimed that no one respects women more than he does, which was laughable. It made me so mad to hear that Brock only served 6 months for raping that girl, and how much more time people serve for such petty crimes, like marijuana use. It blows my mind that this is to be expected and not only are women put through horrible experiences, but the male doesn’t pay the price he should. It is so wrong, and I wish something would change so that men who abused women were put away for a long time, and punished as they should be. It is shocking that 1 in 5 girls/women face being sexually assaulted. It is sad that it is so common, and that there isn't more being done.

  3. You have great points here. I'm glad you are bringing up a topic that is important. Men should not be able to think that women can be treated like that. As a girl i do a lot of locker room talk but not as bad as a male does. Plus names and identities are always descreat and i'm not a politician that could be the future president of the USofA's. Kinda scary that somebody in our classroom will be raped or might have. It should not be that way. I'm scared for what this country stands for and we are more concern about the drugs that come into play. Drugs are what people choose to do. Nobody chooses to get raped.

  4. I liked the read! I was very smooth and wasnt too overbearing considering the very controversial topic\horrible topic.

I played football, basketball, volleyball, swimming, was in car clubs. Pretty much I have seen this "locker room talk" that Trump uses to defend his embarrassing private conversation. Now, I grew up with a mother, and an older sister. I was taught to respect women and to protect them, not "grab them by the pussy". I think Trump using the term "locker room" talk is a general term and is not the type of locker room talk I do, but I have heard some pretty degrading things in locker rooms or with a group of guys that are young. Its embarrassing for me.

I think society needs to really look at the image the media is creating for women. Listen to a rap song recently? Watch some tv? Kardashians are in the news for the dumbest reasons. Trump was wrong, why hasnt anyone said anything about the rappers? The Brock case hasnt been brought up in a few months, even though he had armed protestors at his house.

The statistics are scary and things need to change.
